 Cultural Consultation Process Minimize


Research activities at WDHB must be consistent with the provisions of the Treaty of Waitangi and as such meet the rights, needs and interests of Maori. Consultation should occur during the development of the research proposal. Consideration must be given to the impact of the research, or research outcomes on Maori and on how, under the Treaty of Waitangi, partnership, participation and protection of Maori have been addressed.

All WDHB research projects must undertake a consultation process with Nga Kai Tataki. For information and assistance with this process please contact:

The following text should be included on all WDHB Participant Information Sheets
in a paragraph after the contact details for the Health & Disability Advocate:

To ensure ongoing cultural safety Nga Kai Tataki - Maori Research Review Committee Waitemata DHB encourage those who identify themselves as Maori and who are participating in health research or clinical trials to seek cultural support and advice from either Mo Wai Te Ora – Maori Health Services or their own Kaumatua or Whaea.

>> Guidelines for Researchers on Health Research Involving Māori. The HRC’s Māori Health Committee has recently updated these guidelines. The guidelines are designed to assist researchers who intend undertaking biomedical, public health or clinical research involving Māori participants or research on issues relevant to Māori health. The guidelines inform researchers about consultation and the processes involved in initiating consultation with Māori.

>> Whakatataka Tuarua - Maori Health Action Plan 2006–2011, the second Maori Health Action Plan, sets objectives for Maori health over the next five years and builds on from Whakatataka - The Maori Health Action Plan which was implemented in 2002, which has provided the health sector with a valuable tool for contributing to reducing health inequalities between Maori and non-Maori.

>> He Korowai Oranga - Maori Health Strategy sets the direction for Maori health development in the health and disability sector for the next five to 10 years.

He Korowai Oranga and Whakatataka Tuarua: Maori Health Action Plan 2006–2011 provide a framework for the Ministry, DHBs and key stakeholders to take a leadership role in improving Maori health outcomes.

HRC Maori Health Research Database The creation of this database is part of the fulfilment of goal 5 of Nga Pou Rangahau Kia Whakapiki Ake Te Hauora Maori 2004-2008 (The Health Research Strategy to Improve Maori Health and Wellbeing 2004-2008). The creation of a database of Maori health research has been called for by Maori health researchers at the last two Hui Whakapiripiri. The database will allow users to search for projects in the area of Maori health funded by the HRC since 1999.
